McShann, Jay (1909–2006)

US jazz musician. A distinctive pianist, he led a Kansas City swing band 1937–44 (which included Charlie Parker 1937–42) and his own small combos thereafter. Popular songs include ‘Confessin' the Blues’ with this band, as well as ‘Ain't Nobody's Business’ (1949) with blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon.

McShann was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma. After serving in World War II, he moved to Los Angeles. At the end of the 1960s he re-emerged as a popular singer and collaborated frequently with violinist Claude Williams.
