Meadow Lake

Town in northwestern Saskatchewan; population (1991) 4,300. Meadow Lake is located 248 km/154 mi northwest of Saskatoon and 100 km/62 mi east of the Alberta border.

Formerly the subject of constant dispute between the rival Hudson's Bay and North West companies in the 18th and early 19th centuries, Meadow Lake later developed as a farming, forestry, and ranching area. Meadow Lake Provincial Park lies immediately to the north, and an Indian Reserve (population 300) is located here. Nearby, Steele Narrows Provincial Historic Park, on Loon Lake, marks the site of a battle at the end of the Riel Rebellion, in 1885.
