Mecham, Evan (1924–2008)

US businessman and politician. A World War II army veteran, he made millions as president of Mecham Pontiac in Glendale, Arizona (1950–88). A controversial governor of Arizona (1987–88), most notorious for refusing to recognize Martin Luther King's birthday as a state holiday, he was impeached for misuse of government funds and obstruction of justice.

Mecham was born in Duschesne County, Utah. After serving in the state senate as a Republican (1960–62), he became American Newspaper Group publisher (1963–74). The Arizona State Senate convicted him of impeachment charges for failing to report a $350,000 loan from a real estate developer and lending $80,000 of government funds to his auto dealership.
