The mechanical advantage of a pulley increases with the number of rope strands. If a pulley system has four ropes supporting the load, the mechanical advantage is four, and a 5 newton force will lift a 20 newton load.
In physics, the ratio by which the load moved by a machine is greater than the effort applied to that machine. In equation terms: MA = load/effort.
The exact value of a working machine's MA is always less than its theoretical value because there will always be some frictional resistance that increases the effort necessary to do the work.
