Mechanicsville

Community in Hanover County, east-central Virginia; population (1990) 22,000. This largely residential suburb lies on the Chickahominy River, 11 km/7 mi northeast of Richmond.

Mechanicsville is the site of a Civil War battle fought on 26 June 1862, in which the Union army repelled a Confederate attack. This was the first engagement in Robert E Lee's Seven Days' Campaign, when his forces tried to advance along small Beaver Dam Creek. It was followed the next day by a battle at Gaines's Mill.
