Mechelen

Industrial city and market gardening centre in Antwerp province, north Belgium, 22 km/14 mi south of Antwerp, on the Dyle River; population (1997) 75,300. Industries include furniture, carpets, and textiles. Agricultural produce includes asparagus and peas. The city no longer produces the Mechlin lace for which it was famous.

Mechelen is the see of an archbishop, primate of Belgium. The cathedral of St Rombaut contains a fine altar-piece by the Flemich painter Anthony Van Dyck. Some of the other churches in Mechelen contain pictures by Rubens, including The Adoration of the Magi in the church of St John. The Cloth Hall was built in 1320, and the old palace of the Grand Council of the Netherlands in 1374.
