Mechem, Edwin Leard (1912–2002)

US politician and lawyer. A lawyer in Las Cruces, New Mexico (1939–50), he also worked as an FBI agent (1942–45) and served on the State Police Commission. The first Republican governor in twenty years (1951–55, 1957–59, 1961–62), he was popular despite limited legislative success, retiring to fill out a term in the US Senate (1963–64). He later resumed his law practice. Mechem was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
