Meckering

Town in the midlands of Western Australia, 132 km/82 mi east of Perth; population (1996) 100. In 1968 an earthquake destroyed the town and injured 17 people. Meckering was immediately rebuilt, although it has never reached the same level of population or importance it had prior to the earthquake. A section of the earthquake faultline is still visible 12 km/7 mi to the south of the town, and also 3 km/2 mi to the west.

Meckering was established as an agricultural region during the 1890s, after the Perth to Kalgoorlie railway line reached the area in 1892. It remained a service centre to a prosperous wheat farming district until the earthquake struck.
