Medea

In Greek mythology, the sorceress daughter of the king of Colchis. When Jason reached Colchis, she fell in love with him, helped him acquire the Golden Fleece, and they fled together. When Jason later married Creusa, daughter of the king of Corinth, Medea killed his bride with the gift of a poisoned garment, and then killed her own two children by Jason.

Medea

Greek tragedy by Euripides, produced 431 BC. It deals with the later part of the legend of Medea: her murder of Jason's bride and of her own children, after desertion by Jason.

Play with music (melodrama) by Jiři Benda (text by F W Gotter), produced in Leipzig on 1 May 1775. The plot is based on the Greek myth: Medea takes revenge on treacherous husband Jason by killing their children and his lover, Creusa.
