Medfield

Town in Norfolk County, eastern Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 6,700. Medfield is situated 27 km/17 mi southwest of Boston, on the east bank of the Charles River. It has developed from being a largely rural, affluent community involved in cattle-raising, into a growing suburb.

Medfield, originally called by the American Indian name ‘Boggastow’, was founded in 1650 and incorporated the following year. It was burned down during King Philip's War (1675), but swiftly rebuilt.

In the 19th century, it was for a long period the home of US landscape artist George Inness.
