Clement VII (1478–1534)Pope 1523–34. He refused to allow the divorce of Henry VIII of England and Catherine of Aragón. Illegitimate son of a brother of Lorenzo de' Medici, the ruler of Florence, he commissioned monuments for the Medici chapel in Florence from the Renaissance artist Michelangelo.
