Medlam, Charles (1949– )

English conductor and cellist. He studied with Maurice Gendron in Paris and with Harnoncourt in Salzburg. In 1978 he founded the London Baroque with Ingrid Seiffert. The ensemble gave the premiere of Scarlatti's opera Una villa di Tuscolo and a revival of Gli equivoci sembiante. Medlam has directed Dido and Aeneas and works by Blow and Lully in Paris, Handel's Aci, Galatea e Polifemo on tour in Europe and Rameau cantatas with Emma Kirkby. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 1991, with music by Mozart and also conducts Charpentier, Bach, and Monteverdi.
