Medora

City and seat of Billings County, in western North Dakota, 56 km/35 mi west of Dickinson; population (1990) 100.

Situated on the Little Missouri River in the Badlands, this largely restored cattle town is a grain and livestock centre. It was founded in 1883 by the Marquis de Mores, a French nobleman who established a cattle empire here and named the town after his wife. The De Mores Historic Site, immediately to the southwest of the city, now surrounds his original chateau. US president Theodore Roosevelt raised stock at nearby Chimney Butte Ranch, now the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Medora is at the southwestern entrance to the park's South Unit. Sully's Creek Primitive State Park is just south of the city.
