Meerut

City in Uttar Pradesh, north India, 65 km/40 mi northeast of Delhi; population (2001) 1,167,400. Industries include chemicals, soap, paint, sports goods, musical instruments, and sugar refining. The Indian Mutiny began here in 1857. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, Meerut has strong Muslim associations, and there has been periodic violent conflict between Muslims and Hindus.
