Mefistofele

Opera by Boito (libretto by composer, based on Goethe's Faust), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 5 March 1868. Faust gains a moment of happiness but loses Margherita after accidentally poisoning her mother. Faust repents and eludes Mephistopheles.

The poet was clearly echoing the aria of his Mefistofele, where the protagonist presents himself as the spirit "che nega sempre tutto" (Corse 42).
