Mehmet Ali (or Muhammad Ali) (1769–1849)

Pasha (governor) of Egypt from 1805, and founder of the dynasty that ruled until 1953. An Albanian in the Ottoman service, he had originally been sent to Egypt to fight the French. As pasha, he established a European-style army and navy, fought his Turkish overlord in 1831 and 1839, and conquered Sudan.
