Meknès

City in northern Morocco, 56 km/35 mi southwest of Fès; population (1995 est) 427,000. Founded in the 10th century by Berbers, it is one of Morocco's four imperial cities and was the capital until 1728. Chief industries are leather goods, pottery, wine production, textiles, canning, cement, and vegetable oils.

Moulay samil, sultan 1672-1727, built several palaces in the city, rivalling those of Louis XIV at Versailles. The town is also the site of his tomb. Other notable buildings include Bou Inania Médersa (a religious college founded in the 14th century), the Grand Mosque, and the Musée des Arts Marocains.
