melaleuca tree

Tropical tree belonging to the myrtle family. The leaves produce cajuput oil, which is used in medicine. (Melaleuca leucadendron, family Myrtaceae.)

In favourable conditions, such as in the Florida Everglades, the tree reproduces rapidly. Attempts are being made to root out and destroy it because in a forest fire its crown becomes a ball of flame, rapidly spreading the blaze in all directions.
