Melartin, Erkki (1875–1937)

Finnish composer. He studied at the Helsinki Conservatory, Wegelius being his composition master, and later in Germany. He became professor of composition at the Conservatory in 1901, and conductor at Viipuri 1908–10. He was director of the Conservatory 1911–22.

the opera Aino (1907); ballet Sininen helmi.

Orchestral

eight symphonies (1902–24), five orchestral suites, symphonic poems; violin concerto.

Chamber

four string quartets; violin and piano sonatas; piano sonata and c. 400 pieces.
