Melbourne

Industrial city in Brevard County, east-central Florida, USA, on the Indian River lagoon, 90 km/56 mi southeast of Orlando; population (2000) 71,400. Aerospace, other high-technology industries, and tourism are the main industries of the city; other industries include food processing and the manufacture of electronic and aviation equipment. Nearby is the Kennedy Space Center. Melbourne is the home of the Florida Institute of Technology (1958).
