Melfi

Town in Basilicata region, southern Italy, 40 km/25 mi northwest of Potenza at the foot of Mount Vulture; population (1991) 15,800. It became the capital of Apulia in 1044. There is a cathedral (partly 12th-century) and a Norman castle.
