Melfort

City in central Saskatchewan, 85 km/53 mi southeast of Prince Albert; population (1991) 5,600.

Originally settled in 1892 on Stoney Creek, the town was moved 2 km/1 mi northwest to its present site in 1902. Expansion followed the arrival of the Canadian National Railway, and today Melfort is a market and supply centre serving the extremely fertile Carrot River Valley.
