Melk

Austrian village in the province of Lower Austria, on the River Danube; population (1991) 3,600. On a cliff 52 m/171 ft above the town stands a huge Benedictine abbey, one of the most magnificent baroque buildings in the world. Melk lies in the part of the Danube valley known as the Wachau.
