Mellers, Wilfrid Howard

Mellers, Wilfrid Howard (1914–2008)

English critic and composer. He studied at Cambridge and began to write criticism in the review Scrutiny, of which he became music assistant editor. He was professor of music at York University 1964–81 and awarded the OBE in 1982. He wrote books on Couperin, American music, Bach, and Beethoven.

opera Christopher Marlowe (1950–52); Ricercare for orchestra, Ricercare No. 2 for chamber orchestra, Ricercare No. 3 for string orchestra; Concerto grosso for chamber orchestra; string quartet, piano quartet, Eclogue for string trio, string trio (1945); choral music and songs.
