Roman Benedictine abbot. He was sent by Gregory (I) the Great to England in 601 at the head of a group of missionary monks to carry on the work of St Augustine. He was the first bishop of London (c.604) and became the third archbishop of Canterbury from 619–624. His feast day is 24 April.
