Melo

Capital of Cerro Largo department in northeast Uruguay, near to the Brazilian border and 320 km/199 mi northwest of Montevideo; population (1996) 42,615. Situated on the River Tacuari, it is a commercial centre for wool, hides, livestock, and grain. There is a railway and an airfield.
