Melville Island

Island in the Timor Sea, off the northern coast of Australia, about 80 km/50 mi north of Darwin, from which it is separated by the Clarence Strait; area 5,450 sq km/2,104 sq mi ; population (1996) 2,975 (with Bathurst Island). Melville Island is 112 km/70 mi long and 48 km/30 mi wide. The island lies just to the east of Bathurst Island, and both islands are inhabited by the Tiwi aboriginal people. The settlements are Pularumpi and Milikapiti.
