member of Parliament

Representative of a section of the UK population who attends the British parliament. An MP is elected to represent the people who live in a geographical area called a constituency, and then attends the House of Commons, where the activities of the government are considered by the members and legislation is passed. MPs divide their time between their constituencies and the houses of Parliament in London. An MP can ask questions of government ministers, join committees, speak in the House of Commons, and consider and propose new laws.

"Keep the box for me, Leader," exclaims the Member of Parliament to the coachman; who replied, "Yes, Sir Pitt," with a touch of his hat, and rage in his soul (for he had promised the box to a young gentleman from Cambridge, who would have given a crown to a certainty), and Miss Sharp was accommodated with a back seat inside the carriage, which might be said to be carrying her into the wide world.
