Menai Strait

Channel of the Irish Sea dividing Anglesey from the Welsh mainland; about 22 km/14 mi long and up to 3 km/2 mi wide. It is crossed by two bridges. Thomas Telford's suspension bridge (521 m/1,710 ft long) was opened in 1826 but was reconstructed to the original design in 1940, and freed from tolls. Robert Stephenson's tubular rail bridge (420 m/1,378 ft long) was opened in 1850, and is known as the Britannia Bridge.
