Mende

A West African people living in the rainforests of central east Sierra Leone and western Liberia. They number approximately 1 million. The Mende are farmers as well as hunter-gatherers, and each of their villages is led by a chief and a group of elders. The Mende language belongs to the Niger-Congo family.

Mende

Capital of the French département of Lozère, on the River Lot, 125 km/78 mi northwest of Avignon; population (1999) 11,800. The town has a textile industry and a market. Mende is a bishopric, and its cathedral was begun in 1369 by Pope Urban V, who was born here. It is a base for tourists visiting the nearby Tarn Gorge and the Cévennes.
