Mendelssohn, Arnold (Ludwig) (1855–1933)

German composer, son of a cousin of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. He studied law at Tübingen and music in Berlin, and held teaching and conducting appointments at Bonn, Bielefeld, Cologne, Darmstadt, and Frankfurt, where Hindemith was his pupil.

Works

operas Elsi, die seltsame Magd (after Jeremias Gotthelf, 1896), Der Bärenbäuter (1900), and Die Minneburg; cantatas; madrigals to words from Goethe's Werther; church music; symphony in E♭ major; violin concerto; two string quartets; sonatas for violin and piano, cello and piano, and piano; songs and part-songs.
