Cao Cao (or Ts'ao Ts'ao) (155–220)

Chinese general who reunified and pacified northern China after the collapse of the Han dynasty. Cao's exploits are recorded in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, China's oldest extant novel, and in other works, in which he appears as a heroic figure. His son Cao Bei (or Ts'ao P'ei) founded the Wei state, one of the Three Kingdoms.
