Mennin, Peter

Mennin, Peter (1923–1983)

US composer. He studied at the Eastman School and taught composition at the Juilliard School, New York, 1947–58. He was president at the latter from 1962.

Orchestral

nine symphonies (1942–81), Sinfonia for chamber orchestra (1947), Fantasia for strings (1948), violin concerto (1950), Concertato, Moby Dick (1952), cello concerto (first performance New York, 1956, with Leonard Rose), piano concerto (1958), Cantata de Virtute, based on The Pied Piper of Hamelin (1969), Symphonic Movements (1971) Reflections of Emily, to texts by Emily Dickinson (1979), flute concerto (1982).

Chamber

two string quartets (1941, 1951), piano sonata (1963).
