Menninger, Karl Augustus

Menninger, Karl Augustus (1893–1990)

US psychiatrist, instrumental in reforming public mental-health facilities. With his father, psychiatrist Charles Menninger, he founded the Menninger Clinic in Topeka 1920 and with his brother William, also a psychiatrist, established the Menninger Foundation 1941.

Born in Topeka, Kansas, Menninger was educated at the University of Kansas, and received his MD degree from Harvard University 1917. Among his influential books were The Human Mind 1930, Man Against Himself, and The Vital Balance 1963.
