Menomonie

City and seat of Dunn County, west Wisconsin; population (1990) 13,500. Menomonie lies on the Red Cedar River and Lake Menomin, 35 km/22 mi northwest of Eau Claire.

Settled in the 1830s, Menomonie was originally a lumber town; its ornate civic centre (1890) and several mansions in the town were built by lumber tycoons. Today, Menomonie is primarily a market and processing centre for the surrounding dairy-farming region. Industries include the production of dairy goods, canning, flour milling, and the manufacture of aluminium wares and bricks. The Stout campus of the University of Wisconsin (founded 1891) is sited here.
