In Homer's Odyssey, an old man, adviser to Telemachus in the absence of his father Odysseus. His form is often taken by the goddess Athena.

Mentor

City in Lake County, northeastern Ohio; population (1990) 47,400. This residential and industrial suburb is situated 35 km/22 mi northeast of Cleveland and 8 km/5 mi south of Lake Erie.

Founded in 1799, Mentor is the site of ‘Lawnfield’, a farm owned by US president James A Garfield; this now contains a museum commemorating Western Reserve history. The city is home to Lakeland Community College (founded 1967). Goods produced in Mentor include trucks, forklifts, computer components, electronic instruments, and air-conditioning units. Plant nurseries also contribute to the local economy.
