Mercalli scale

Qualitative scale describing the intensity of an earthquake. It differs from the Richter scale, which indicates earthquake magnitude and is quantitative. It is named after the Italian seismologist Giuseppe Mercalli (1850-1914).

Intensity is a subjective value, based on observed phenomena, and varies from place to place even when describing the same earthquake.
