Merced

City and seat of Merced County, in central California; population (2000) 63,900. Merced is situated on Bear Creek in the San Joaquin Valley, 89 km/55 mi northwest of Fresno.

Merced is the gateway to Yosemite National Park, 72 km/45 mi to the northeast; visitors are also attracted here by a variety of more local natural sights. The city is a processing, packing, and shipping point for the corn, rice, sugar beets, vegetables, fruits, nuts, cotton, dairy goods, and figs that are cultivated in the surrounding irrigated agricultural region. Other industries make metal and concrete products, carpets and curtains, and recreational vehicles. Nearby Castle Air Force Base is a major local employer. Merced College (founded 1962) is located in the city.
