Mercedes

Health resort and capital of the province of Soriano in western Uruguay, 32 km/20 mi east of Fray Bentos; population (1996) 36,702. Situated on the Río Negro, it is a popular centre for yachting and fishing, and markets the agricultural produce and livestock of the surrounding rural area. The town was founded in 1788.

Mercedes

City in Hidalgo County, in the far south of Texas; population (1990) 12,700. Mercedes is in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, 48 km/30 mi west-northwest of Brownsville, in an area where oil and natural gas are extracted. Processing facilities for locally grown vegetables and citrus fruit are in the city, together with footwear manufacturers. Mercedes is also popular as a winter resort.
