Mercer Island

City in King County, west-central Washington, located on Mercer Island in Lake Washington, 8 km/5 mi southeast of Seattle; population (1990) 20,800.

This upper-middle-class dormitory settlement lies between Seattle and Bellevue (5 km/3 mi to the northeast). Its growth was a direct result of the construction of the Lacey V Murrow Floating Bridge (1939), the first such structure ever built, which connects the island to Seattle. The bridge sank in 1990, but was reopened in 1993.
