Merian, Maria Sibylla

Merian, Maria Sibylla (1647–1717)

German biologist and entomologist who studied the life cycles of butterflies. She supported herself by designing fabrics and publishing books.

In 1699 she travelled to Dutch Suriname to draw the flora and fauna, published as Over de Voortteling en Wonderbaerlyke der Surinamsche Insecten 1730.
