Meriden

Industrial city in New Haven County, south-central Connecticut, on the Quinnipiac River, 24 km/15 mi east of Waterbury; population (1992) 58,600. It has been a centre of silverware manufacture since the 18th century. Other industries include aircraft accessories, electronic equipment, plastics, and jewellery.

Meriden was first settled in 1661 and incorporated as a city in 1867. Pewter was produced here from 1794, and the International Silver Company was established in 1898.
