Meckel's diverticulum

Pouch formed at a weak point in the wall of the ileum. It is often symptomless, but may cause inflammation, with symptoms identical to those of acute appendicitis; or it may lead to ulceration, with bleeding and the likelihood of perforation. Treatment is by surgical removal. It is the commonest congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract, occurring in about 2-3% of the population.
