Merope

Opera by Gasparini (libretto by A Zeno), produced Venice, Teatro San Cassiano, 26 December 1711. Polyphontes overthrows King Cresphontes, executing him and two of his three sons. Aepytus escapes and, after growing up, kills Polyphontus and becomes the rightful king.
