Merrie England

Book published in 1893 by socialist journalist Robert Blatchford (1851–1943), calling nostalgically for an end to industrialism and a return to the rural way of life in England.

Jean and I would take the trolley bus to the bottom of Crosland Road (where the Merrie England diner is now) and then we walked up past the prisoner-of-war camp - later a school - to the farm.
Merrie England made him famous, but his true masterpiece is Tom Jones, based on Henry Fielding's novel.
It was a Cleveland Technical College production of Merrie England, and our picture shows Hilary Betteridge, Barbara Lilley and John Gallagher.
