Merritt, Wesley

Merritt, Wesley (1834-1910)

US soldier. After graduating from West Point in 1860, he saw service as a cavalry officer during the Civil War, including Gettysburg. From 1866-79, he served on the western frontier. He was superintendent of West Point (1882-87). After years at various administrative posts, he was given command of the army forces that captured Manila, Philippines, from the Spanish in 1898. He briefly served as military governor of the Philippines (1898-99) before retiring from the army in 1900. Merritt was born in New York City and grew up in Illinois.
