Merritt Island

Community on the island of the same name, in Brevard County, east-central Florida; population (1990) 32,900. The town lies 84 km/52 mi east-southeast of Orlando and 18 km/11 mi southwest of Cape Canaveral.

Merritt Island is connected by causeway across the Indian River lagoon to Cocoa, on the mainland, and across the Banana River lagoon to the Cape. It is a waterfront resort, popular with visitors to the nearby Kennedy Space Center. Its population swelled from the 1960s onwards with residents employed by NASA on the space programme and by the military. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which covers an area of 570 sq km/220 sq mi, is situated in the north of the island.
