Merseburg

Town in the Land (administrative region) of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, on the River Saale, 14 km/9 mi south of Halle; population (1996) 42,000. Industries include engineering and paper, and there are lignite mines in the vicinity. Merseburg was capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Merseburg 1656–1736, and became part of the territory of Prussia in 1815. The town has a cathedral dating from the 11th–16th centuries.
