Merton, Louis Thomas (1915-1968)

US Trappist Christian monk. He felt that contemporary society was suffering an inward crisis and stood in need of contemplative reflection. His poetic and spiritual writings include an autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain 1946. His writings were directed to those living a monastic life, but his influence is much wider.
