Merulo, Claudio (1533-1604)

Italian organist, teacher, and composer. Famous in his lifetime for his organ playing, he is best known today for his keyboard music.

He was appointed organist at Brescia in 1556 and second organist at St Mark's, Venice, in 1557, advancing to first organist in 1564. In 1584 he left Venice, visited the court of Mantua, and became organist to the ducal chapel at Parma.
